Tech support and “virus” scams

A pop-up, call or email says your computer or phone has a virus or has been hacked, and gives a number to call. The “technician” asks to connect to your device and charges you — or gets into your bank account.

How it works

  • A loud pop-up may freeze your screen and tell you not to turn off the computer.
  • They ask you to install a remote-access app like AnyDesk or TeamViewer.
  • They may say you were “refunded too much” and need to send money back.

Warning signs

  • A pop-up or call saying you have a virus
  • A request to install an app so they can “fix” it
  • Asking you to log in to your bank while they watch
  • Payment by gift card or crypto

What to do

  • Don’t call the number and don’t let anyone connect to your device.
  • Close the browser or restart the computer.
  • If you already let them in, disconnect from the internet and call a family member and your bank.

What it can look like

MICROSOFT SECURITY ALERT: Your computer has been infected with a virus and your bank information is at risk. Do not turn off your computer. Call Microsoft Support immediately at 1-888-555-0199 so a technician can connect with AnyDesk.
